TIA DELIVERS TOY SAFETY MESSAGE TO HUNDREDS OF FAMILIES AT “SAFE KIDS DAY” EVENTS IN LA AND NYC
April 6, 2014 | The Toy Industry Association (TIA) is partnering with Safe Kids Worldwide to provide parents and families with tips for keeping their children safe during Safe Kids Day 2014 celebrations on both coasts this month. The events “celebrate kids, prevent injuries and save lives” by helping to raise public awareness about preventable childhood injuries both inside and outside of the home.  TIA’s participation includes providing guidelines for choosing age-appropriate playthings and keeping children safe at play.

“When we talk about preventable injuries, we’re not talking about skinned knees, bruised shins or scraped elbows. That’s what happens when curious kids explore the world,” said Kate Carr, president and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide.  “We’re talking about serious injuries – like car crashes, drownings, fires or falls – that end lives or change them forever.”

With the support of 20 sponsors – from Children’s Tylenol to Parents magazine to TIA – Safe Kids Day 2014 held its launch event in Los Angeles, CA last Saturday (April 5th) and will hold a second ‘showcase’ event in New York City this weekend (April 12th). About 100 local education and awareness programs are also being held across the country throughout the month of April.

In LA, the fun-filled celebration included family games, activities and special guest celebrity appearances. Large toy props and plush donated by TIA members JAKKS Pacific, Wicked Cool Toys and Funrise Toys enhanced the “Safe Kids Story Time” area, where celebrities Drew Barrymore and Ciara read to the kids. Copies of TIA’s Fun Play, Safe Play brochures were included in hundreds of gift bags distributed to the parents and kids in attendance.

At the New York City event this weekend, TIA will sponsor a “Fun Play, Safe Play” playground, distribute more brochures, and provide toys donated by TIA member companies Alexander Doll, Cardinal Games, Commonwealth Toy and Novelty, Mattel, North American Bear and Playmobil.

“TIA and its members are proud to be long-time supporters of Safe Kids Worldwide and its mission of raising awareness about childhood injury prevention,” said Joan Lawrence, TIA vice president of safety and regulatory affairs. “Both our organizations share a common objective of keeping kids safe. Events like ‘Safe Kids Day’ help to reinforce for parents and caregivers that so many childhood injuries are preventable. There are little things parents can do so kids can grow up to do big things.”
