“STANDARDS LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD” ANNOUNCED AS 2014 THEME FOR ANNUAL PAPER COMPETITION
The following article is based on a press release issued by the American National Institute of Standards (ANSI).

April 13, 2014 | The stakes are high for prolific writers in the toy industry as $4,000 in award monies awaits the winners of an annual paper competition sponsored by the U.S. standards community.

Sponsored each year by the U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day Planning Committee and SES – The Society for Standards Professionals, the
2014 competition focuses on the role that standards play in supporting trade and economic growth.  The theme,Standards Level the Playing Field, incorporates two distinct aspects of standardization:  how standards open doors for small and medium enterprises to get their products certified and on store shelves around the world, and how nationsthat incorporate international standards into their regulations allow their own citizens access to a wider selection of safe, high-quality goods.

The competition is open to anyone in the standards community – from toymakers and the laboratories and organizations that provide compliance testing – to representatives across dozens of other industries.  Winners will be announced at this year’s
U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day banquet, to be held Thursday, October 23, 2014 at the Fairmont Hotel in Washington, DC. Cash prizes will be awarded to up to three papers selected by a panel of judges. The first place winner will receive a plaque and $2,500; the second and third place winners will receive $1,000 and $500, respectively, along with a certificate. Winning papers are expected to be published in the SES journal, Standards Engineering.

All paper competition submissions must be sent via email to admin@ses-standards.org by midnight eastern time on Friday, August 8, 2014. Papers must be previously unpublished, between 2,500 and 4,500 words long, and formatted in 10-point, Times New Roman font. Submissions must include a completed
entry form.

Since its initial celebration in 1970, World Standards Day is now a globally recognized initiative. The U.S. Celebration of World Standards Day is organized annually by a planning committee consisting of representatives from across the standards and conformity assessment community, and is co-chaired by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The National Institute of Building Science (NIBS) will serve as the 2014 administering organization for the U.S. Celebration of WSD.
